Description
The Apollo Pavilion is a Grade II* listed cantilevered structure made of reinforced concrete, cast in situ, featuring iron railings and balusters. It showcases two different surface finishes: fair face and exposed aggregate, which is bush hammered. The design includes a series of cubic shapes that create four plinths, supporting an upper level with additional partly interlocking shapes of various sizes. The pavilion extends over the eastern end of a small lake, which drains to the east via a weir that regulates water levels.
The lower floor of the pavilion crosses the lake just above the water level, connected by a curving concrete path. On the south side, concrete steps with iron railings lead up to the upper level, which has an iron gate added in 2009. The pale concrete features two abstract hand-painted murals in black on the inward-facing sides of the outer ends; these were renewed in 2009. To the immediate west of the main structure, a metal pole supports an abstract, tubular concrete sculpture rising from the lake.
Surrounding the pavilion, the area is paved with cobbles set in concrete, sloping down to the water's edge around the lake and on either side of the stream as it flows eastward. There is also a viewing platform overlooking the beck to the east of the pavilion.
