Description

The Church of St Lawrence is a small medieval parish church built from local Blue Lias rubble, featuring some ashlar dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof adorned with cruciform finials, kneelers, and raised coping, along with a slender bellcote at the west end. The church has a simple plan consisting of an aisleless nave, a south porch, and a narrow, shallow chancel. The windows are designed with cusped lights. The gabled porch includes a plain chamfered pointed-arched doorway with voussoirs, and there are two-light square-headed nave windows with moulded hoods on each side. A similar single-light window is located on the south side of the chancel, along with a chamfered pointed-arched priests' doorway. The east window features two lights with quatrefoil tracery. The north and west elevations do not have any windows. There is a plinth, and at the southeast corner of the chancel, at ground level, are stones inscribed with cross patterns. Incorporated into the northeast and southeast chancel are inscribed stones, likely from the 13th century, depicting crosses.

Inside, the church is mostly rendered, with some areas of exposed stone and a floor made of mostly unglazed tiles. The 19th-century roofs consist of four bays with arch-braced trusses and exposed rafters in the nave. The narrow pointed chancel arch is chamfered and stopped at the base, featuring a raised impost band. The narrow chancel arch may reflect a 12th-century origin, according to Newman.
