Description
West Orchard Farmhouse is a largely 18th-century farmhouse, though retaining features of earlier construction. The farmhouse is built of local lias limestone rubble, rendered and painted, with a Welsh slate roof and three square ridge stacks constructed of rubble stone. It has two storeys and originally three windows, featuring 8-over-8 sash windows. A gabled stone porch with a round-headed outer opening sits on the right-hand side; it contains a modern door leading to the cross-passage. Stacks are located backing onto the passage for the main hall, and further stacks are situated on the ridge (likely a later addition for the bedrooms), the left gable (for the parlour), and there is an additional firestair. The rear elevation includes a two-storey outshut that houses a branching staircase, with a small square window. To the left of the outshut is a modern lean-to, added to accommodate a new kitchen following the division of the historic house in 2001.
Internally, there are three 2-centred, chamfered stone doorways with pyramid stops. The hall has a chamfered beam with pyramid stops. A double staircase is present in the north outshut, alongside other chamfered beams, although the interior was modernised, likely in the early 19th century. The roof structure was not inspected. The double stair suggests the range may have been built in two phases, with an additional firestair also present.
