Description
The East Kilns at Aberthaw Lime and Cement Works are a pair of large lime kilns built from coursed quarry-faced local limestone rubble with red brick quoins. The kilns stand about 20 meters tall with battered walls, featuring two semi-circular openings on the west side and charge holes on top. They represent a significant advancement in the lime burning industry, capable of burning 300 tons of limestone at a time. The kilns were designed for automatic charging via a tramway and a tipping device, allowing waggon loads of lime and coal to be delivered directly to the charge holes. Inside, the kilns are lined with firebrick, and they have stone-lined tunnels and iron doors.
