Description
The group of four chest tombs is located in the churchyard of St James in Pyle. The first tomb (a) is made of limestone and is set on a stone base with a moulded plinth and fluted corners. It features a ledger slab on top and has boldly moulded oval sides with fan corners. The northern side displays a well-cut inscription dedicated to David Richards of Merthyr, who died in 1823, and Margaret Morgan of Pyle, who died in 1828.
The second tomb (b) is made of sandstone and is similar in style to the first, but it is raised on two steps. This tomb commemorates Catherine Powell, who died in 1843, and her son Jehosaphat, who died in 1909.
The third tomb (c) is also sandstone and features a plain slab-sided chest design. Its end panels are moulded at the top and bottom, and it has a hipped ledger slab. This tomb is dedicated to Jehosaphat Powell of Lanmi(hangel), who died in 1819, with additional names inscribed.
The fourth tomb (d) is constructed from Welsh blue slate and has reeded corners along with a moulded ledger slab, all set on a stone base. It commemorates Elizabeth Moses, daughter of J. Powell, who died in 1831, and features very fine lettering.
