Description

The Morgan monument is located in the churchyard of St James in Pyle. It is made of sandstone and features surrounding railings made of cast iron. The monument has a tapered die set on a moulded base, topped with a prominent gabled capstone that includes egg and dart moulding on each face. The gables are adorned with a wreath and ribbons that extend to the corner acroteria. Above the die, there is a broken column encircled by a garland. Each face of the die is inscribed between downturned torches, commemorating Evan Morgan, who died in 1859; Catherine Morgan, who died in 1854; and Phyllis Thomas, who died in 1898. Additionally, John Thomas of Pencoed, who died in 1894, is also mentioned. The monument is closely surrounded by tall railings, which have fluted corner stanchions and pointed terminals.
