Description
27-52 Park Terrace is a row of terraced houses built in pairs, facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. These houses feature a side door, one window above and one on the ground floor, a shared central stack, and a consistent roofline that accommodates the rising ground between the pairs. Constructed from snecked, roughly dressed ironstone, each opening is framed by large stones with massive single lintels, and some brick is used for the stacks. The original roofs were made of Welsh slate, though most have been replaced with concrete tiles and blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, with a few still remaining, while later adaptations include horned sashes. Most of the glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, but the original openings and deep sills remain unchanged. The rear elevations had similar glazing and are depicted on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map without rear outshuts, which are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but each double plot has a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed at the end, many of which still exist in adapted forms. At each end of the terrace, except for the southeast, there is a later house that varies from the standard design. The terrace retains horned 3/3 pane sash windows, a later 19th-century adaptation of the original 8/8 pane sashes, and some houses still have Welsh slate roofs.
