27-52 Park Terrace (consec)

27-52 Park Terrace is a row of terraced houses built in pairs, facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. Each house has a side door, one window on the ground floor, and one above, with a shared central stack and roofline. The design accommodates the rising ground between the pairs with steps in the roofline. The houses are constructed from snecked, roughly dressed ironstone, with large stones bordering each opening and massive single lintels. Some stacks are made of brick. Originally, the roofs were covered with Welsh slate, but most have been replaced with concrete tiles and blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, with a few remaining, while later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most of the glazing has been replaced with late 20th-century PVC-U, but the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations had similar glazing and are depicted on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map without rear outshuts, although these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but each double plot has a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed at the end, many of which still exist in adapted forms. At each end of the terrace, except the southeast, there is a later house that varies from the standard pattern. The terrace retains some 3/3 pane horned sash windows, a later 19th-century adaptation of the original 8/8 pane sashes, and a Welsh slate roof.
