Description

The Friends Meeting House is a rectangular late Georgian building constructed with rubble masonry featuring quoins and brick window dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof. The east front has three sash windows, including one small-pane window for the meeting room. To the left, there is a lower entrance lobby that has been altered, which includes a small-pane fixed glazed window and a raised scribed panelled door with a brick lintel at the return angle. Above this entrance, there is a short small-pane sash window for the upper meeting room.

On the right side, there is a low panelled basement door with a brick surround, next to a gated arched entrance that features a roughly dressed pedimented architrave. This entrance is set into a high rubble and iron-railed boundary wall that leads to a sloping graveyard. The wall connects to the plain roadside end wall of the meeting house, which has a date plaque and curves around to the east, incorporating the north boundary of the Castle inner ward. The rear (west) side of the building is partially cement rendered, with rubble exposed where the gable end of a row of cottages once joined. There is a horned sash window in the upper meeting room.

The graveyard is overgrown, and the Meeting House was rarely used at the time of inspection. The interior is simple, featuring a tall square main meeting room on the right with a two-tier dais at the end wall and a full-height boarded and panelled screen at the entrance end, which has doors leading to a narrow cross passage. There is also a smaller upper meeting room.
