Description
Neath Castle is a significant historical site featuring a rounded earthwork trace with stone revetment walls. The castle includes substantial remains of a twin-towered gatehouse on the west side. This gatehouse is three stories high, with D-ended, rubble-work towers that show traces of limestone dressings and evidence of 19th-century repair work. The towers have decayed arrow slits on all floors, with one intact arrow slit located on the second floor of the right-hand tower, and numerous putlog holes are present.
Above the gateway, there is a machiolated arch at wall walk height, made of stone voussoirs, with an impost block surviving to the right. A blocked lancet is situated above the gateway, and the gate features a pointed two-order roll-moulded arch. There are traces of a possible barbican in front of the gatehouse, and steps from an earlier 13th-century gatehouse can be found within the gate passage. To the right, there is a short length of curtain wall with a single decayed arrow slit.
At the time of inspection in June 1988, the building was in a neglected condition. Neath Castle is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
