Description

Bethesda Presbyterian Chapel is a chapel located within a stone-walled and railed enclosure, alongside its manse. While the manse and the connecting section to the chapel have been significantly modernized, the chapel itself maintains a symmetrical south elevation facing Burry Green, though it has been rendered. The front features two windows and a later porch, with a slate roof that is hipped at both ends. The chapel's name is displayed on a stone above the porch. A small annexe known as Lady Barham's room is situated at the northeast corner. Both the east and west end elevations of the chapel also feature two windows. The original multi-pane windows with interlacing glazing bars are preserved in the end elevation facing the manse, while the other windows have been replaced with late 19th-century timber windows. The rear elevation is mostly blank, except for a gallery door and exterior stairs.

Inside, the most notable feature is the bow-fronted original gallery that extends from the north wall, supported by columns. It includes a moulded handrail with inch-square balusters above broad panels with a base moulding, and a plain continuous beam carried on three surviving Tuscan columns. The interior has undergone alterations, including the addition of two blocks of late 19th-century pine pews facing the pulpit to the east. There is a boarded dado, a slightly raised set fawr in pine with canted corners, and a pulpit with panelled back panelling that includes a brass memorial plaque. At the west end of the room, there is a secondary gallery, and beneath it, a later vestry partition with panels that can be opened.
