Description
Bethesda Capel Bach is a 19th-century chapel aligned north to south, featuring a rendered exterior and a slate roof that is hipped at both ends, with the ridge and hips tiled. The entrance is located at the north end, which has two tall pointed windows with equilateral arches flanking a central doorway. A name plaque is positioned centrally at a high level. The windows are framed with a simple surround in relief that mimics plain pilasters and voussoirs, and they have stone sills supported by brackets. The window frames have been replaced. The entrance doors are double and set within a doorcase that includes freestanding columns at the front and a simple timber entablature. These columns rest on brick plinth-blocks. On the west side of the chapel, some windows have been walled up, while two similar windows are located beside the pulpit on the rear (south) elevation. There is a small extension to the right.
Inside, there is a small anteroom with a coloured glass window that overlooks the chapel. Stairs on either side lead to a gallery, which features four-panel doors that are symmetrical. The interior retains few original features, although there is a recess with a Gothic canopy at the pulpit position and a boarded dado. The ceiling is divided diagonally by ribs into four panels, with a large decorative plasterwork roundel at the center. The gallery encircles three sides of the chapel and has a front made up of broad panels, supported by four almost plain round columns approximately 100 mm in diameter. The stairs to the gallery on each side have simple turned newels and inch-square balusters. The gallery contains four rows of seating above the entrance and two rows on the sides, with the seating being plain and featuring panelled backs.
