Description
The Cornish engine house of Penprys Colliery is a ruin constructed from local sandstone, featuring brick dressings around its openings. The masonry is laid in an informal manner, with larger dressed stones used at the corners. There are door openings on the south and east sides, and windows located on the north side and at a high level in the east gable. The openings have cambered arches with timber inner lintels. Some masonry on the west side has collapsed, but the engine house still stands to its full height, although it is now roofless. The foundations of associated machinery have been recorded on the west side of the engine house and are included in the Ancient Monument scheduling, though they are currently obscured by undergrowth and tipping. The basement of the engine house is approximately 3 meters below ground level and features a central cross wall.
