Description

The former stables at Hendrefoilan is a long, symmetrical two-storey building with a prominent gabled bay at the center. It features lower flanking wings that extend at right angles to the front, creating a yard. The structure is built of snecked stone and topped with slate roofs. It has horned sash windows set in square-headed stone surrounds. The central gabled bay includes a wide 4-centred entrance arch made of voussoirs, which has been infilled with glazing. Above this entrance, there are two 12-pane sashes on the upper storey and a blind roundel that may have once held a clock. A bell cupola with a finial and weather vane rises from the ridge of the roof.

On either side of the advanced bay, there are pairs of windows, with 4-over-8-pane sashes above and 16-pane sashes below. The lower left window has been converted into a door. The flanking ranges have different heights, with the left side being one-and-a-half storeys and the right side being one storey, both featuring small square 4-pane windows in heavy surrounds. The gable end of the left range has a window on each storey, while a glazed lean-to entrance corridor has been added to the interior side. The outer west side has three windows, one of which is double, and there are skylights in the roof. The right range has a double 4-pane window on the gable end and similar windows on the outer east side. The interior side contains an integral wood planked screen with an added half-lit door, illuminated by a continuous row of 4-pane windows above.

A short wall projecting from the southeast angle supports a large open-side steel canopy with a glazed hipped roof, which has two bays at the front and three bays on the west side, with bracing on the angle posts. The west gable end of the main range features 16-pane sash windows, with two on the ground floor and one above. The rear of the building is built into a bank and is partially below the level of Hendrefoilan Road, showcasing a central gabled bay with a 16-pane sash window. To the right, there is an inserted doorway accessed by a walkway beneath a shallow raked dormer, along with skylights in the roof.

The interior of the building has been converted into a library.
