Description

St Paul's Church is a Grade II listed building constructed from brown stone with paler freestone bands and dressings, topped with a slate roof. It features a spirelet on the ridge towards the east. The main entrance is located on the north side, accessed through a porch with twin doors at the top of curving flights of stone steps.

The return elevation facing St Helens Road has a gable end that includes a large seven-light window in the perpendicular style, flanked on each side by canopied niches. Above this window, there is a small pointed window at the apex of the gable. At ground level, there is a wide segmental-headed window with four lights in the center, flanked by deep segmental-headed windows with two lights on each side, supported by intermediate buttresses.

The south elevation consists of five bays. Starting from the east (right), the first three bays each feature tall perpendicular style windows with two lights. The fourth bay contains the gable end wall of a short transept at the west end of the main body of the church, which has a perpendicular style window with four lights, a small pointed head light above, and a deep segmental-headed window with two lights on the ground floor, along with diagonal buttresses. The fifth bay showcases the southern elevations of a lower wing that contains the main body of the church; this section has a two-light window with its head at eaves level. Below this window, a flight of stone steps with a stone balustrade leads up to a lean-to porch wing, which features a two-light flat-headed window on the left side of the south wall and a gabled porch on the right. The north elevation of the church is similar to the south elevation but does not have a porch at the east end.
