Description

The Church of St John is a Grade II listed building featuring a mix of Gothic architectural elements. The east elevation includes clerestorey lancets and an aisle with a two-light window on the left return. A gabled porch, with a roof that sweeps down to the right over a store, contains a Gothic doorway with boarded doors that have elaborate strap hinges. To the right of the porch, there are two two-light windows separated by a buttress.

At the angle between the aisle and the chancel stands an embattled tower, which has a stair turret at the northeast corner topped with a steep polygonal roof and pinnacles at the other corners. The bell stage features two-light louvred windows, with lancets on the north and south sides and a round window on the east. The ground floor has lancets and buttresses, along with a small window in the splay.

The chancel has a doorway with a lancet to the left and a two-light window to the right. The north end features a three-light chancel window with geometrical tracery, and the roof sweeps over a vestry to the west, which has a small Gothic window on the north return. Above the chancel, there is a small trefoil window in the apex of the nave gable. The plain west wall of the nave, which has a window to the north, includes relieving arches and clerestorey lancets, along with a chimney to the north. The south end has stepped buttresses and a two-light window with a quatrefoil, while the wall to the left is toothed for an unbuilt aisle.

Inside, the church has a simple interior with an arch-braced roof in the nave and scissor trusses in the chancel. The walls are plastered with painted stone dressings, and the clerestorey windows have segmental heads. The aisle arcade features alternating round and octagonal piers, and there are steps leading up to the chancel. The south bay of the aisle and the base of the tower have been partitioned for kitchen and storage use.
