Description
The Morfydd Street Bridges and Boundary Wall to Davies Street is a Grade II listed structure. The bridge is built of rubble sandstone and features a primitive copper slag string course, rubble voussoirs, and slag copings. The canal has been filled in to a level above the towpath. The bridge has a complex structure, consisting of two crossings of the canal. The northern part resembles a typical 18th-century canal 'changeover bridge', designed to allow the towpath to switch from one bank to the other. The deck is accessed by two ramps from the towpath, creating a sweeping curve on the north face of the bridge. One ramp connects to the towpath that runs under the bridge, while the other leads to the towpath on the opposite side, enabling horses to change banks without needing to untie the rope. The southern part of the bridge features a steeply inclined deck that carries Morfydd Street down the hill, with high parapets on either side, the northern one separating it from the towpath crossing. In the mid-19th century, the bridge was extended with a span made of similar materials to the west, allowing Morfydd Street to cross over a railway branch. A boundary wall, constructed from similar materials, extends southward along the west side of the railway route for the length of Davies Street.
