Description

Penrice Castle Stables is a building constructed around three sides of a yard, located on the east side of the road with the open side facing south. The east and west wings extend slightly north of the central link block, creating an uneven H-shaped plan with gables oriented to the north and south. In the recess between the small northward projections of the wings, there are two later brick and slate buildings, which date from before 1888. The stables feature red painted brickwork with stone dressings and a grey slate roof. Attached to the east wing is an additional range that includes sheds for four carts or coaches. The wings and the central block share the same eaves and ridge heights. The roofs were reconstructed in the late 19th century or early 20th century, featuring diminishing slate courses, lead ridges and valleys, cast iron rainwater pipes, and ogee gutters. The roofs also have upright purlins that project from the gables and are bracketted at the verges.

The walls are designed to resemble arcades, with a high rendered plinth and a continuous stone string course at the impost level. The elevation facing the road consists of seven bays, including two with mullions and a transom, which incorporate sash windows both above and below the transom. The link block's elevation to the yard has five bays, featuring two-order arches only in the outer positions, a central door, windows above the string course, and two roof-lights. Each wing's elevation to the yard comprises four bays, also with two-order arches in the outer positions, doors at the ends, and windows in two bays above the string course. The south and north elevations of the wings each consist of two bays. It is said that the stables have lath and plaster partitions and a loft over each unit.
