Description
The South-West Gates, Railings and Piers of Penrice Castle are a formal gateway located in the boundary wall of the castle park. The gateway features two main sandstone piers that support the gates, along with two smaller outer piers connected by fixed railings. The walls on either side are made of rubble sandstone and stand 2 meters high, with a stile to the right.
The main piers are square and approximately 3.5 meters apart, designed with heavy rustication and vermiculation, and have hollowed corners. They rest on tall plinths with base moulding and have a small cornice. The finials on top are stylized stone flower or acorn heads on slender hollow stems, each accompanied by a thin vermiculated horizontal block. The outer piers are constructed from plain ashlar on small plinths, each topped with a simple slab coping and a hollow-stemmed cushion finial. The gates and side railings are made of plain wrought iron, featuring dog railings.
