Description
The Cole Grave in St Andrew's Churchyard is a grave featuring a granite slab, headstone, footstone, and four kerbstones. The headstone is designed as a Celtic cross, complete with a wheel-head, collar, and a steep tapering shaft, all carved from a single piece of stone. The arms of the cross are adorned with simple three-point interlaces, while the center displays a four-pointed interlace. The halo circle is recessed and has radial fluting. The inscription on the shaft commemorates Sir Christopher Cole, including his honors and dates, while the rear of the stone remains plain.
The slab is shaped into a shallow pyramid or 'hogback', with a central ridge running its length and a cross ridge. The overall plan is lozenge-shaped, with rounded-topped kerbstones positioned against each of the four facets. The outer sides of these kerbstones are decorated with scales or petals. The footstone is a short finial featuring four lobes and a lozenge-shaped opening, positioned above a collar.
