Description
Penrice Castle North-West Gates, Railings and Piers is a formal gateway located in the boundary wall of Penrice Castle park, positioned diagonally at the intersection of two roads. The gateway features two main sandstone piers that support the gates, along with two smaller outer piers made of oolitic limestone, which are connected by fixed railings. The walls on either side are constructed of rubble sandstone and stand 2 meters high. To the right, there is a stile.
The main piers are square and approximately 3.5 meters apart, showcasing heavy rustication and vermiculation. They have a tall plinth with base moulding and a small cornice adorned with fine vertical fluting. Atop each main pier are stone globes on slender hollow stems, each featuring a prominent vermiculated square block at mid-height. The globes and cornices have been restored. The outer piers are made of plain ashlar on small plinths, each topped with simple slab coping and a finial shaped like a poppy seedpod. The gates and side railings are plain, made of wrought iron, and include dog railings.
