Description
The North-East Gates, Railings, and Piers of Penrice Castle are the main formal entrance in the boundary wall of the castle park, positioned to face the main approach road from Swansea. The gateway features two prominent sandstone piers that support the gates, along with a section of fixed railings on either side that connect to the masonry of the folly or gatehouse.
The square piers, which are approximately 3½ meters apart, are heavily rusticated and vermiculated. They have a tall plinth with a base moulding and a small cornice adorned with fine vertical fluting. The finials on top of the piers are stone poppyheads mounted on slender hollow stems. The plinths beneath the fixed railings have been restored. The gates and side railings are simple, made of wrought iron, and include dog railings.
