Description
Mount Calvary English Baptist Chapel Hall is a building featuring snecked facings with pale freestone dressings and some red brick, topped with slate roofs that have tiled cresting. The gable is flanked by polygonal turrets that include apsed staircase towers. A distinctive traceried 5-light window is present, along with a band of blind panels above a moulded arched doorway. The chequered turrets are capped with ball finials. The top storey of the stairs has distinctive cusped panels and lights, while the side elevation is buttressed and features a cross gable with two light cusped windows. The school-room gable has a similar design, with a 3-light plain window above an arched doorway and outside stairs to the right. The forecourt is enclosed by piers and railing.
Inside the chapel, there are intruded angles for open-handrail stairs. The interior has a three-sided ceiled roof with a "crossing" bay above the pulpit area, featuring collar-beam trusses with arched braces that rest on curved corbels. A U-plan gallery is present, adorned with bowed ironwork anthemion panels and supported by cast-iron columns. The gallery front sweeps down below the organ, which is housed in an arched chamber. The perpendicular pulpit is complemented by open work handrails. The rear school-room also has a three-sided ceiling roof, with trusses on wall-posts and cast-iron columns behind panelled screens on one side only.
