Description

Capel Tabernacl is a Congregationalist chapel featuring a three-bay gabled front, constructed with snecked masonry and freestone dressings, along with a plinth and a moderately pitched slate roof. At the apex, there is an ironwork finial on a stepped base. The gable parapet has a moulded cornice and eaves band, which rises from angular stepped corner piers. Although the pinnacles with ball finials have been removed, the advanced center bay includes an arched recess topped by an oculus, above a Tuscan tripartite round arched window at the gallery level, complete with keystones. Above a channelled freestone doorcase, there is a corniced sill band, and the round arched doorway features Tuscan pilasters and moulded panelled doors.

The outer bays have tall round arched two-light windows, also with keystones and bracketed sills. The side elevations are plain with five round arched windows, featuring modern glazing, while the schoolroom in the basement has Victorian sash windows. The forecourt is railed and includes gatepiers at the center.

Inside, the chapel has a rectangular galleried layout with a plain ribbed ceiling adorned with a large central rose and a moulded cornice. The raked gallery has a curved panelled front supported by modillions. The interior features good fluted cast iron columns with octagonal bases and acanthus capitals, along with turned balusters and square newels leading to the deacons' seats. The design is similar to the swept staircases flanking the canted pulpit, which is decorated with fretwork panels. There is also a panelled organ case, and plain cast iron columns support the schoolroom below.
