Description

Paragon Tower is a circular building, now incomplete, constructed from stone rubble with dressed stone dressings. Joist holes indicate that it once had a timber roof. The structure features a large central circular chimney with a narrow stringcourse and a circular external wall. The interior space is divided by angled walls into four wedge-shaped rooms, each containing a fireplace. These fireplaces are low and have narrow voussoirs, with the chimney breast curving outwards above them; angled joist holes are also present above. The dividing walls do not connect with the external wall, allowing for a circuit walk just inside. The external walls have pointed arched entrance doorways, some of which are still intact while others are blocked. The main entrance group of three facing west retains their heads, and there are signs of former internal and external lime render. To the right, there is a slightly curved wall and a damaged entrance leading to a now ruinous roughly rectangular wing. To the left, a longer wall with a more pronounced curve features a blind archway, which appears to be an original feature, extending towards a separate rectangular building that stands at roughly wallplate and gable level, with a dividing internal ground floor wall. At the rear, there is a ruined retaining wall supporting the hillside terrace on which this building complex is situated.
