Description
The barn and stable range at Newton is a small structure that is partly integrated with an adjacent cowshed and is aligned roughly north to south. It is built of stone rubble, which is partly limewashed and partly roughcast, and features a mostly Welsh slate roof, with some areas covered in corrugated material. The barn includes ventilation slits on the side and a triangular ventilator in the gable end, along with a remodelled door.
Attached to the barn is a lower-roofed cowshed with a stone rear wall, supported by chamfered wooden posts at the front. The outward-facing side of the attached stable has square-headed stable doors and stable windows, which are fitted with timber lintels and brick sills. The elevation that faces the house features a catslide roof over an outshut, with small rectangular windows. The gable end has a pitching door located above a recessed ground floor doorway.
Inside the barn, there is a stone threshing floor. The roof trusses are constructed with struts and are secured using a combination of bolts and pegs, featuring three rows of trenched purlins. The ventilators have sharp arrises.
