Description
Newton Farmhouse is a gentry farmhouse featuring a central entry and a rear outshut. The building is constructed of stone rendered in roughcast and has a steeply pitched Welsh slate roof, with a catslide to the rear over the outshut. The end stacks, which were remodeled in the early 19th century, are made of coursed stone and have narrow cornices, with a taller kitchen chimney located at the rear. There is evidence of heightening on the west wall. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range, although most of the glazing was replaced in the late 20th century. The attic window in the right gable end retains its stone hoodmould. A polygonal porch was added in the 20th century to the central doorway.
At the rear, there is a low single-storey wing that has a large chimney in the gable end, which may have been a wash-house. The central entrance leads into a former cross passage, with stairs located at the rear left, now incorporated into the room on the right, which features an open fireplace. There is a separate smaller room to the left, both of which have chimneys on the side walls. The rear kitchen has deep chamfered and stopped fireplace joists and a cross beam, while a former dairy is located across the passage.
