Description
This building is a barn located to the north of Upper Stanton Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of red grey sandstone rubble and features a corrugated sheet metal roof. The barn shares a gable end with the adjacent cowhouse, which is also used as a chapel, but its ridge line is higher than that of the cowhouse.
The front wall of the barn includes a central doorway with a small porch that has a sloping roof. To the right of the doorway, there is a small square window that opens into the cowhouse. The right gable end features three doors for the cowhouse, although two of these doors are blocked. This area is designed for two ranks of cows and includes a central feeding passage. Above, there are two tiers of vents for the hay tallet. The rear wall has central doors that lead to the threshing floor.
The barn is a five-bay structure supported by four principal rafter trusses with raking struts, although the roof has been replaced. The west gable includes the blocked east window of the medieval chapel, which is now part of the attached cowhouse.
