Description
Rock Cottage is a 19th-century building constructed from rock-faced and coursed red sandstone rubble, topped with slate roofs. It features deep gables adorned with decorative carved bargeboards. The gable chimneys sit on low plinths and have paired diagonal shafts, with one shaft truncated. The striking garden elevation consists of three bays and two storeys, with a central section that rises an extra storey, resembling a tower above the ridge level. This central part is rectangular in plan and projects at both the front and rear, featuring angled corners and a hipped roof with angled corners above jettied upper courses of masonry. The attic window in the centre bay is a 2:2:2 casement with arched lights. The first floor has cross-windows with paired 8-pane sashes, and the centre window is topped with a shallow gable and a decorative carved bargeboard. The ground floor windows on the left and right are cross-windows with paired 4-over-6 sashes, each with Tudor hoodmoulds. The central entrance features a four-centred doorway. The interior was not available for inspection during the resurvey in October 1999.
