Description

This is a two-storey farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century, with a three-window front. The front facade is rendered and features markings intended to imitate ashlar, although it appears to have originally been slate-hung. The gables and rear elevation are of painted rubble, and the roof is slate-covered. The farmhouse has broad, rubble end chimneys with brick detailing, and a smaller lateral chimney to the rear centreline which has been heightened in brick. A small, 20th-century gabled porch sits centrally at the front, with paired boarded inner doors featuring small windows. The ground floor has wide 20-pane sash windows either side of the porch. The upper floor has a 4/8 sash window to the left and right, and a narrower 2/4 sash window slightly right of centre, set at a lower level. A small lean-to is attached to the left end, and a 19th-century six-pane window is visible on the first floor, with a timber lintel above. The right end features a three-light casement window on the first floor, with a labelled dripmould above.

The rear elevation has a broad, rubble-built lean-to to the right, featuring a small window to the left and a 4+4 casement to the right. A 19th-century 6+6 casement is located to the left on the first floor, alongside a 4+4+4 casement set right of centre. A 20th-century metal window is positioned on the far right. At ground floor level, a 17th-century three-light mullioned window is present to the left, featuring ovolo moulded mullions with hooks for shutters and a labelled dripmould. The central mullioned three-light window has chamfered mullions and a broken label. To the left of this window is a labelled dripmould above a blocked opening, possibly a former door, although no masonry breaks are visible, and the opening is not precisely aligned with the front door.

The farmhouse sits within a large front garden, enclosed by whitewashed rubble walls on three sides. A central 20th-century gate sits within the walls, as well as a gate on the right return wall, near the house.

The building has an unusual layout, incorporating a hall to the left and a parlour to the right, with a small, heated room to the rear centre. It's possible that the central room was created later by removing a cross-passage and extending into the hall or parlour, which might account for the blocked rear door. However, the corner fireplace within this room is characteristic of the late 17th century and may not be a later addition. The hall features a boxed-in beam and a 20th-century grate, along with stone steps leading down to a cellar with stone benches on three sides. The parlour has plain beams and a fine 17th-century bolection-moulded chimney-piece, featuring a pilastered overmantle with a moulded panel and cornice. The central room has a corner chimney with a 19th-century iron grate, and a simple, enclosed straight-flight staircase from the 19th century. Boarded doors lead to the first floor, with the doors off the landing having chamfered frames and curved stops.
