Description

Llwyn-du Court is a double-depth, central-entry villa built in the classical style associated with Robert Lugar, likely dating to the 18th century, and extended with single-depth wings in several directions. The elevations are largely rendered and painted, possibly over brick, with natural slate roofs and brick stacks. A stone porch and steps form part of the building. The south-east (entrance) elevation has six bays, with a loggia added in 1936 to the right of the original three-bay section. The central entrance has a substantial Bath stone ashlar porch with steps leading to double doors, which have a decorative head, fanlight, and a Tuscan pilaster surround. Corner pilasters support a cornice with a balustraded parapet around a balcony, with sidelights to the porch. A French casement opening provides access to the balcony above the porch. Flanking bays have a French casement with a raised surround on the ground floor and a 6 over 6 pane sash window above, topped with pediments. The roof slopes gently with ridge stacks. The first bay to the left mirrors this design, including a hipped roof and a canted end with blind panels, the upper floor panels having arched heads. Adjacent to the right is another added bay windowed in the same style, followed by a three-window canted bay with 6 over 1 pane sashes on the lower level and 6 over 6 above. Narrow 1 over 1 pane sashes are situated to the left of this, with the ground floor window projecting forward and supported by a balustrade. Finally, to the right, is a three-bay, single-storey loggia with French doors set behind a Tuscan colonnade. A long wing extends north-west from behind the entrance block, returning to the north, and now functions as a separate house. This wing is also two storeys high and has four bays facing west, with the leftmost bay set slightly forward. The ground floor features two large canted bays. All windows on the first floor are 1 over 1 sashes with architrave surrounds; the window in the second bay from the left is a paired one. This section has a low-pitched roof with a central ridge stack. The rear elevation has not been inspected, and the interior was unavailable for examination at the time of resurvey.
