Description
The former Bethel Chapel, now known as Boots, is a stone building constructed in a classical style, featuring a slate hipped roof. The entrance front is symmetrical, highlighted by a wide central projection with pilasters, topped with a large open pediment that includes a circular field with an inscription in its tympanum. Below the pediment, a broad elliptical arch frames a large modern shop window. On either side of this arch are doorways with pointed heads and dripstones, each fitted with two-leaf fielded panelled doors. The central projection is flanked by narrow pilastered bays, each featuring a tall round-headed sash window with intersecting tracery. The returns of the building include five similar sash windows. At the rear, there are two round-headed windows with intersecting tracery, and in the end bays, there are round-headed doorways with overlights. Also at the rear is the rebuilt former forecourt wall and railings.
Inside, the space has been converted for commercial use but still retains a panelled ceiling, and the rear of the front arch showcases relief decoration.
