Description

Cantre Selyf is a house with an L-shaped plan and a large rear southeast wing, dating from the 18th century. The stone walls are now covered in cement render, and it features a deep hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. The house has panelled stone chimney stacks flanking the wing that faces Lion Street. The elevation towards Lion Street consists of two storeys with six windows, a first-floor moulded band, a plinth, and quoins. The windows are twelve-pane hornless sash windows with architraves. The doorway in the third bay from the left has a doorcase with a bracketed entablature and a two-panelled door. The rear wing, which faces the yard, is also two storeys high and is pebble-dashed, with irregular window spacing, generally featuring twelve-pane hornless sash glazing. There are lead-glazed cross windows on the rear elevation.

The interiors are well-preserved and include a staircase with turned oak balusters and newel posts that have carved decoration. The staircase hall features fielded panelled doors. In the current kitchen, the plaster ceiling consists of panels, each with a circular motif, separated by ceiling beams. A room to the rear left has 18th-century detailing and an early 19th-century bow window. The upper floors of the rear wing display plasterwork with trailing vinescrolls, while the upper floor of the main house has late 17th-century plaster ceilings adorned with floral wreaths.
