Description

The Catholic Church of St Michael is a building in a simple Gothic style, constructed with grey rubble walls arranged in courses and featuring pale ashlar dressings. It has a slate roof. The narrow southeast end of the church, which is the liturgical west end, faces Wheat Street and is flanked by a buttress and a battered plinth. In the center, there is a shallow projection with sides that taper towards the apex of the gable, which includes a two-light window at ground level and a small canopied niche above. The bellcote has two openings and a gable topped with a cruciform finial.

The southwest wall of the nave, which is buttressed, consists of five bays with a battered plinth and tall narrow lancet windows. There is a gabled ashlar entrance towards the eastern end of the southwest nave wall. The lower chancel features a group of three lancets and a gabled end with a three-light window in the Decorated style, complete with coloured borders and sacred monograms.

Inside, the nave has five bays and a timber roof supported by scissor trusses and wall-posts on corbels. An organ gallery is located at the Wheat Street end of the church. The chancel arch is tall, and the chancel also has a scissor truss roof. To the right in the chancel, there is a doorway and two recesses, one for a piscina and the other for a sedile, both adorned with trefoil heads. Just inside the main door is an octagonal stone font, likely designed by Hansom. The west gallery has a replacement organ that was installed in 2014.
