Description

The Lyric Theatre and its front range to King Street is a range of shops and offices with a cinema-theatre located behind, built in the 1930s in a modern style. The front range is three storeys high with five bays, constructed in painted stucco and topped with a parapet. The central bay is stepped slightly higher, featuring plain flanking pilasters and a flat cap with stepped shoulders. The flanking bays incorporate raised pilasters, with a triangular-section strip between the windows and at the outer angles. A broad band runs above the ground floor. All upper-floor windows are 16-pane horned sash windows. A central, later 20th-century glazed metal neo-Victorian entrance porch with columns provides access. Inside the porch, two rectangular overlights are positioned above four deeply recessed panels with 10 panes of glass each; the two central panels serve as doors, featuring 1930s brass plates and handles. Contemporary shopfronts extend along both sides.

The corner of the building is curved, and the wall at the left end is a remnant of a building dating from 1854. This section is three storeys and three windows wide, with a cornice and band. The first-floor windows are 16-pane sashes, while the ground floor features two large recessed panels containing cambered-head windows with keystones, mirroring details from the lost front elevation; the third bay has been altered.

The entrance lobby leads from the front range into the theatre's foyer, which features two sets of four glazed doors, with glazed display boxes positioned on either side. The original panelled ceiling is obscured. A second set of doors has sunburst glazing above. The foyer has a deep, panelled ceiling and cornice running in bands. A half-round booking kiosk is clad in veneer and decorated with lines in blue, gold, and red. A fielded-panelled door leads to an office on the left, while an enclosed broad stairwell is located on the right. Two sets of double fielded-panelled doors provide access to the auditorium, relocated in the late 20th century one bay further out than their original position. The auditorium itself is relatively plain, with a sloping ceiling and Art Deco style motifs on the vents. The upper gallery front has alternate panels with raised strips wrapped around the underside. A lower gallery was added in the late 20th century. The gallery foyer displays an Art Deco banded cornice and a recessed late 20th-century bar, with a detached round pier in front. A display cabinet is situated on the opposite wall, and double half-glazed doors lead to the gallery. Two original Peerless projection units are displayed in the foyer.
