Description
Theatr Elli is a brick and tile-clad building designed in the art deco style. The entrance front projects from the wider main block, featuring curved angles that house stairs. There is a lower rear block that steps down, which includes some modern additions. The frontage is predominantly covered in faience tiles, arranged in a chequer-board pattern, with striated brickwork above in the projecting entrance block and plain brick side panels in the return elevation. The left-hand return has been altered with a modern extension, while the rear is entirely faced with brick.
The entrance consists of three doors separated by tiled fins and flanked by slightly projecting brick panels that are banded with black tiles and have a green and black tiled plinth. Above the doors, which are topped by a modern canopy, is a black-tiled panel featuring five tall metal-framed windows. The verticality of these windows is highlighted by green-tiled panels above each one. There are narrower triple lights in the curved angles on each side, with black-tiled bands between them, and small windows aligned at the ground floor.
Despite some alterations, much of the original layout from the 1930s remains intact, along with original details. The arrangement of the entrance foyer and the first floor, which is curved in plan, appears to be original and retains features such as moulded architraves around doorways and the staircase, which includes baluster rails and skirting. Inside the cinemas, elements of the original decorative scheme are still visible, including a ribbed proscenium, ceiling plasterwork featuring a series of roundels, and some wall decoration.
