Description
The Midland Bank is a building from the early 20th century located on Station Road. The front facade features projected outer bays with pediments against blind parapets and a balustraded central section. The ground floor is faced with Portland stone, showcasing channelled rustication and raised channelled pilasters at the center. It has arched windows with coved reveals, stone sills, keystones, and a Bath stone cornice. The upper floor is constructed with blue lias walling and Bath stone dressings. The outer bays have channelled angle piers and windows framed in moulded architraves with segmental pediments on brackets, while the center has three similar windows topped with triangular pediments. The building is adorned with a rich entablature and a modillion cornice that projects over the outer bays and steps out over the angle piers. The balustrade features panelled pedestals, and the parapet behind the outer pediments has panelled spandrels.
The John Street front is simpler, lacking the pedimented forward breaks, and has four windows, with the second bay being narrower and featuring an open pedimented doorcase dated 1912. The entrance bay has a recessed convex curve with cornices that wrap around. The first floor is entirely clad in Bath stone, flanked by Corinthian columns on each side, and has a recessed convex two-light window with curved sashes, a center mullion, a moulded cornice, and a convex panel above adorned with carved ornate festoons. The ground floor is made of Portland stone, featuring a large cornice and a convex pediment, which is decorated with lion heads flanking a central cartouche monogrammed 'MBWL'. This full-width pediment is supported by two Ionic columns with red granite shafts, with concave curved walling behind the door.
The building has 20th-century doors and windows, and old photographs indicate that the upper windows originally had paired small paned sashes. The interior has been altered.
