Description
Moriah Baptist Chapel is a 19th-century building, completed in 1870. The front features raised ashlar plinths, quoins, a sill course below long arched windows, and a heavy cornice. The upper mouldings of the pediment are made of painted timber, which also displays an oval painted plaque stating 'Moriah Baptist Chapel 1870'. The sill course is interrupted by two arched doorways with ashlar surrounds and keystones, leading to panelled doors. Above these doors is a broad arched window, which has a keystone, rusticated jambs, and timber mullions that divide a tripartite window with marginal glazing bars and arched heads. The long side windows also feature similar arched heads, keystones, and rusticated jambs, along with marginal glazing bars. The side elevations each have four long windows in ashlar surrounds, but without rustication, and include a sill course and moulded timber eaves. The basement has four glazing bar sash windows with stone voussoirs, and there is a rendered two-storey rear projection.
Inside, the chapel boasts a fine interior that is galleried on all four sides, featuring ornate curved and pierced cast-iron fronts that sweep down behind the pulpit. There are three cast-iron columns arranged in a 3 x 3 formation beneath the gallery. The pulpit is flanked by steps on either side, adorned with cast-iron gilded balusters and a carved panelled front. The interior includes a plain 'set fawr', a coved ceiling with exceptionally rich plaster panelling, and four rose vents. An organ is situated in a wide recess of the west end gallery.
