Description
The Great War Memorial is located in the gardens at the Town Hall. It features a single stone step leading to a curved-fronted grey granite base, which is inscribed with "To the glorious memory of the men of Llanelly" and "Teyrnged Llanelli i'w gwroniaid." The monument includes a sculpted plinth that is broken forward and adorned with a heavily carved laurel festoon, supporting a bronze depiction of a soldier and an artilleryman at ease, both life-size, against a bronze back panel. The granite rear wall has a splayed foot and a heavy capstone, which is inscribed with "Pro Patria 1914-1919 - 1939-1945."
The bronze sculpture is signed by W Goscombe John RA and was cast by A B Burton, a bronzefounder from Thames Ditton, Surrey. The memorial was unveiled on 27 October 1923 by Major General S F Mott, the commander of the 53rd Welsh Division. Originally, it was situated opposite the Town Hall but was later relocated due to road widening.
