Description

Carmel Independent Chapel is a building from 1865 featuring a classical facade made of rock-faced sandstone, with grey ashlar limestone quoins around the openings. It has a slate roof and a pedimental gable that is interrupted by a central giant arch, which also has ashlar quoins. Within this arch is a round-arched entry fitted with 20th-century doors. Above the entry is a tripartite ashlar window with a segmental head and round-arched lights that are very narrow on the sides. There is a large tablet above the window inscribed with ‘Carmel Independent Chapel 1865’. Each outer bay has a tall round-arched window with simple timber glazing, and there is an ashlar sill-band. The west side, which faces the road, is rendered and features five tall round-arched windows set within round-arched recesses, with glazing similar to that of the front. The rear vestry is a single storey.

Inside, there is a four-sided gallery with long panels between pilasters, showcasing an applied grained finish typical of the 1860s. The gallery steps down behind the pulpit for the organ and is supported by thin iron posts with an applied marbled finish. The ground floor contains box pews, some of which have been dismantled at the rear. The pulpit is serpentine-fronted and made of mahogany, featuring turned balusters in the outer bays and sweeping side stairs. The ceiling is flat and painted, with a boarded and ribbed center that includes a large central rose. A large pipe organ is located in the gallery behind the pulpit. The chapel is currently only partially in use.
