Description

The Plaza Cinema is a modernist building displaying Art Deco influences, likely dating to the 20th century. The front elevation is faced in cream faience tiling, with a band of eau-de-nil colour; decorative leadwork scallops sit below the parapet, and there are black-painted tiles beneath the canopy. A projecting central block features a partially obscured tripartite window with metal glazing bars, and projecting turrets flank the ends. The right-hand side elevation has two broad windows on two levels, with visible metal glazing bars, while the left-hand side elevation has three upper-level windows and a broad window below. The side walls, which screen the body of the cinema, are also faced in faience. The original full-width canopy remains, although the entrance doors have been boarded over, with doors and semi-circular, convex shopfronts on either side. The side elevations are plain roughcast, with tall ribs and small, infilled windows. A large lean-to structure extends to the rear.

Inside, the outer doors open into a lobby with terrazzo steps that feature the inscription "Plaza." These steps lead to a central group of three sets of doors with horizontal glazed panels, long brass handles, and glazing above, with a similar single set of doors to each side. The foyer has cornices with Art Deco decoration and cream and eau-de-nil floor tiles. Staircases are located on either side, and there is a ticket booth near the auditorium entrance. The auditorium has a ceiling with square panels, some of which have ventilator grilles, and some original lamps. A moulded cornice runs along the room, and the proscenium surround to the stage and screen area is also moulded. The balcony area retains its original seating, though the seating in the stalls has been removed.
