Description
St Joseph's Presbytery, located on Mayberry Place in Blantyre, is a substantial two-storey building constructed in 1938 in the Art Deco style. It features a piend roof and retains much of its original fine interior woodwork. The exterior is made of red brick with contrasting banding at the base, cill, and lintel courses. The overhanging eaves are adorned with a stylized cornice supported by a central corbel, and the entrance boasts a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece.
The principal elevation has a strong horizontal emphasis, characterized by a symmetrical design. Steps lead up to a two-leaf timber door situated below a bipartite window at the center. Each floor of the flanking bays also features bipartite windows, while the full-height outer bays are slightly advanced and have a shallow bow at the center, incorporating quadripartite windows on each floor and a stylized blocking course that breaks the eaves.
On the rear elevation, there are set-back bays to the right, which include a tall bowed stair tower and a door on the outer right. To the left, there is a projecting wing with a door on the return to the right. The building has modern glazing on the south side, while some timber casement windows have been retained on the sides and rear. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are banded brick ridge and end stacks with some chimney cans.
Inside, the vestibule features a well-crafted part-glazed screen door that leads to a stair hall and long corridors with dark timber architraved openings, some of which have fluted detailing. The dog-leg staircase leads to the first floor, which shares a similar detailing. Some of the downstairs sitting rooms retain original timber fire surrounds and fitted cupboards.
