Description
Ogof Cottage, built in the late 19th century, is constructed from rubble stone with fine ashlar quoins at the corners. Originally designed as a single dwelling, it appears to be two separate homes. The building is two stories high with a symmetrical three-window main facade on the left and a one-window service range on the right. The windows feature 12-pane sashes with fine cut sandstone voussoirs and slate sills. The main entrance is a central four-panelled painted timber door with an overlight above. The roofs are pitched and slated, with stone stacks and replacement plastic rainwater goods.
The service range has a similar entrance to the main house and features a single 12-pane sash window on each floor to the right, along with a stone end stack. The right gable end has a small two-light window and a small square single-pane light on the first floor, positioned to the right of the gable window. There is also a small ground floor light that is horizontally bisected. The stone voussoirs are present except for the first-floor opening, which has a plain head. The building has a plain timber barge board and wide eaves.
Attached to the north is a lower workshop range made of corrugated tin sheets with a slated roof and a yellow brick end stack. This two-story, three-bay structure features a stone-built gable end wall with a first-floor boarded timber door beneath a timber lintel, accessed by a flight of rough stone steps. The facade wall is covered in corrugated sheets and has a boarded timber door to the ground floor on the left, along with a small contemporary lean-to that projects forward on the right. The lean-to has a pitched corrugated roof and paired garage doors made from the same material. The first floor has two 9-pane timber casements in the left and center bays, and a smaller 4-pane casement, set higher, to the right.
Although not inspected, it is said that Ogof Cottage was built as a single dwelling and has always been occupied as such, despite having two separate staircases. The main house is believed to have been intended for a mill owner and his family, while the corrugated tin section was used for storage and dyeing.
