Description

This is an end-terrace house, likely dating from the 18th century, built with painted stucco on the front elevation and a low-pitched slate roof. A red brick chimney stack is positioned on the left-hand side of the building. The eaves are deep, supported by paired brackets that are interrupted by the window heads. Each house has two bays and two storeys. The first floor features a drip course above the windows and a sill band. It has a tripartite window with 2-2-2 panes of glass and a sash window with two panes of glass, both fitted with horns. The ground floor has a canted bay window to the left with 2-2-2-pane horned sashes, though the detailing here has been simplified. The bay is supported by thin raised piers with console brackets flanking each window, a banded frieze and a deep cornice, which all project forward over the piers. To the right of the bay window is a doorcase with arched panels in the piers, console brackets, and a cornice, leading to a four-panel door and a rectangular overlight. A steep flight of steps leads down to the pavement, with the top three steps paved with marble. A rear wing is visible along Penuel Street and a low rubble stone garden wall runs north beyond the property.

A low front garden wall is constructed of dressed stone with a cast iron coping and cast iron railings featuring interlocking ovals and finials. Matching cast iron gate posts with ball finials and a gate, similar to the railings but with a break in the pattern at the lock rail, provide access. The original interior details remain largely intact, including panelled doors, plaster cornices, fireplaces with console brackets supporting shelves and cast-iron grates. The dog-leg staircase has turned balusters, moulded tread ends, heavy turned newels with finials, and panelling below the lower flight. A chimney recess and wooden cupboards are found in the back kitchen. The iron railings between the gardens of No. 3 and No. 4 are stepped.
