Description
The Old Grammar School is a former school building that has been converted into four dwellings. It is two storeys tall with a basement and has a total of six bays. The outer bays, which are slightly projected, feature low-pitched hipped eaves roofs supported by deep brackets. There are two brick ridge stacks topped with ten terracotta chimney pots. The building is finished with unpainted render, a rubble stone basement, and an ashlar plinth along with surrounds for the ground floor openings.
The outer bays, numbered 1 and 4, each have a pair of two-pane horned sash windows on the first floor. On the ground floor of bay 1, there is a four-paned sash window set in a minimal pedimented ashlar surround. The entrance to bay 4 features a broad ashlar pedimented doorway with similar minimal mouldings to the window of bay 1, and it includes a 20th-century door with sidelights accessed by a broad flight of steps. The entrance to bay 1 is located in the windowless left side wall and has a pilastered pedimented ashlar surround for its 20th-century door.
The central section, comprising bays 2 and 3, has a sill band at the ground floor that is interrupted in the center for two ashlar framed moulded shouldered doorways, each accessed by a flight of steps. These doorways are flanked by four-pane horned sash windows set in ashlar moulded shouldered surrounds, with plain four-pane sashes above each window and 20th-century doors.
On the east end wall of bay 4, there is a large ashlar triple window featuring long lights with arched heads, imposts, and key blocks, with narrow sidelights. The east end wall and the north rear elevation include arched cellar entrances, originally fitted with a door and a small sidelights under a single semi-circular brick low arch, which have been preserved as original features for bays 1 and 4 on the east end wall.
