Description

The Old Grammar School is a former school building that has been converted into four dwellings. It is two storeys high with a basement and consists of six bays overall. The outer bays are slightly projected and feature low-pitched hipped eaves roofs supported by deep brackets. There are two brick ridge stacks topped with ten terracotta chimney pots. The exterior is finished in unpainted render, with a rubble stone basement and an ashlar plinth surrounding the ground floor openings.

The outer bays, designated as Nos 1 and 4, each have a pair of first-floor two-pane horned sash windows. The ground floor of No 1 features a four-paned sash window set within a minimal pedimented ashlar surround. The entrance to No 4 is located on the ground floor right, showcasing a broad ashlar pedimented doorway with similar minimal mouldings to the window of No 1, and it includes a 20th-century door with sidelights that leads up a broad flight of steps. The entrance to No 1 is found in the windowless left side wall and is framed by a pilastered pedimented ashlar surround with a 20th-century door.

The central section, comprising Nos 2 and 3, has a sill band at the ground floor that is interrupted in the centre for two ashlar framed moulded shouldered doorways, which are accessed by a flight of steps. These doorways are flanked by four-pane horned sash windows set in ashlar moulded shouldered surrounds. Above each window, there are plain four-pane sashes and 20th-century doors. The east end wall of No 4 features a large ashlar triple window with long lights that have arched heads, complete with impost and key blocks, while the sidelights are narrow. Both the east end wall and the north rear elevation have arched cellar entrances, originally fitted with a door and a small side light beneath a single semi-circular brick low arch, which have survived in their original form for Nos 1 and 4 on the east end wall. Additionally, No 4 has a 20th-century addition at the northeast corner.
