Description

The Former Capel Dewi School is a slightly asymmetrical single-storey building constructed from informally coursed rockfaced local sandstone, featuring local limestone dressings. These dressings include quoins, an offset course at the plinth, and the openings for windows and doors. The windows are a prominent aspect of the design, being of the mullion and transom type within limestone-dressed openings, with each light being more or less square and divided into four panes. The building has a T-shaped plan, comprising a larger classroom and a smaller classroom, with porches on either side of the crosswing. The girls' porch is located at the left corner, while the boys' porch is positioned against the right gable wall. The roof is slate, adorned with ornamental crest ridge tiles and decorative timber bargeboards.

The front elevation showcases the gable of the forward crosswing along with the porches. It features a three-lancet window in a plate of limestone beneath a broad pointed arch, with timber transoms dividing the lancets into two or three lights. On the left side of the girls' porch, there is a small square 4-pane window, while the front of the boys' porch has a deep door recess with a pointed arch and a ledged, framed, braced, and battened Gothic porch door.

The left elevation includes a triple lancet window similar to that on the front, along with a girls' porch entrance. The right elevation features a high-level circular window in the gable, divided into nine lights by paired mullions and transoms. The rear elevation has three nearly square windows, each with a mullion and a transom.

Inside, the porches are paved with black and red quarry tiles, and some original coathooks remain. The main classroom is large and plain, consisting of three bays with a ceiling at collar-beam level, where the trusses are partly exposed. The smaller classroom has two bays and retains some original dado. Both classrooms contain built-in original wall cupboards, and the interior doors are either four or six panels with chamfered frames.
