Description

78, including the walled forecourt, is part of a row of houses numbered 76 to 82 on the east side of New Road. The buildings are constructed from brown snecked rubble stone and feature slate roofs, although numbers 78 and 80 have concrete tile roofs, along with brick stacks. Each house is two or more storeys tall and has two windows across its front.

In the left bay of number 78, there is a five-panel door with an overlight, set within an elegant painted timber Roman Doric doorcase that includes fluted columns, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice. Above the door, there is a plate-glass sash window with a cambered head, framed by a flush Bath stone ashlar surround. To the right, there is a large two-storey painted timber canted bay window, which features plate-glass sashes with slightly cambered heads. This bay has matching Doric friezes on each floor and slim column angle-shafts. The upper window has a low-pitched leaded roof, and there is a similar leaded skirt between the lower cornice and the upper sill. Above the bay, the eaves break into a stone gable that has ashlar quoins, a fretted eaves bargeboard, and an apex pendant finial. There is also a small cambered-headed sash window in an ashlar flush surround.

The end gable of number 76 is bargeboarded. The front garden walls are made of rock-faced rubble with rounded stone coping and square piers topped with cross-gabled ashlar caps. There are spearhead iron gates, except for number 80, and spearhead iron railings that extend back to each house.
