Description

Nos 76 to 82, including the walled forecourts on New Road (East side), are a group of houses dating from the 19th century. They are constructed from brown snecked rubble stone with slate roofs, although Nos 78 and 80 have concrete tile roofs and brick stacks. Each house has two or more storeys and is two windows wide.

In the left bay of each house, there is a five-panel door with an overlight, framed by a finely painted timber Roman Doric doorcase featuring fluted columns, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice. Above the door, there is a plate-glass cambered-headed sash window set in a flush Bath stone ashlar surround. To the right, there is a large two-storey painted timber canted bay window with slightly cambered heads on the plate-glass sashes, and matching Doric friezes on each floor, along with slim column angle-shafts. The upper window has a low-pitched leaded roof, and there is a similar leaded skirt between the lower cornice and the upper sill. Above the bay, the eaves break into a stone gable with ashlar quoins, a fretted eaves bargeboard, and an apex pendant finial. There is also a small cambered-headed sash window in an ashlar flush surround.

The end gable of No 76 features a bargeboard. The front garden walls are made of rock-faced rubble with rounded stone coping and square piers topped with cross-gabled ashlar caps. There are spearhead iron gates, except for No 80, and spearhead iron railings that extend back to each house.
