Description
This is a three-storey corner building dating from the 20th century, featuring a chamfered corner and a close-eaved slate hipped roof that is also chamfered at the corner. There is a two-storey wing that faces Dark Gate. The building is finished in painted stucco, channelled on the ground floor with a moulded cornice, although the ground floor has been remodelled in the 20th century.
Both elevations facing Blue Street and Dark Gate are similar, with two bays and 12-pane horned sash windows set in stuccoed surrounds on the upper floors. The chamfered angle has no windows. On the ground floor facing Blue Street, there is a former house door to the left that has been changed to a window since 1981, a wide plate glass window in the centre, and plate glass fixed doors to the right, all of which are late 20th century. There is also a narrow plate-glass window on the ground floor corner.
On the Dark Gate side, the ground floor has three openings, two of which have plate glass windows, while the second has double doors, all of which are late 20th century. To the left, there is a low two-storey range that is partly No 9 and partly No 8, featuring a slate eaves roof and four upper 12-pane sashes in moulded surrounds. The ground floor has similar 20th-century detailing with channelled stucco and a cornice. There is a broad 20th-century shop window and similarly sized double 20th-century doors leading into No 9A, as well as a broader and taller 20th-century plate glass shopfront for No 8, complete with stucco voussoirs above.
The staircase in No 1A Blue Street, located on the left side of the Blue Street elevation, has straight balusters and a heavy turned newel. It was noted in 1981 that this staircase has been removed, and the interiors of No 9 have been completely remodelled since then.
